The first episode starts at the point of drama. The episode opens with Bernardo (played by Francois Arnaud) summoning a dead man to chat with his wife because he is a medium. He can communicate with the underworld. He makes use of those talents by charging people who want to speak to their loved ones. In the first few scenes, the ghost of the client becomes a little too much and it almost feels like someone’s going to get killed.

The story progresses and we are now introduced to other inhabitants living in Midnight Texas. We are used to having a werewolf in most series, thanks to the likes of Teen Wolf. This series is different by having one of the characters turn into a beastly tiger when the full moon strikes. A woman is discovered dead and the intrigues that ensue afterwards will leave you on the edge of your seat. This series is not for the faint of heart, there will be creepy scenes.

One of the things to love about the series is the chemistry. Bernardo and Creek, Fiji and Bobo to Lemuel the Vampire and Olivia. They are effortless in portraying how much love and desire they have for each other. The backstories for the characters are also authentic. We all want to know who is hiding what and how that will affect the storyline. There are also elements of surprises like when the cat, owned by Fiji does the unexpected. The conversations also flow and they feel very well written like when one of the cops tells Bernardo, “because you lie for a living…” If a Kenyan askari tells you that, I doubt it will be a smiling matter.

Unfortunately, the plot is a little cliché. We have a fallen angel who was cast from heaven and knows all about the evil that is rising. How many times have you watched a supernatural film with something close to that? Lemuel’s backstory is straight from The Originals. It’s another Marcel story. The stereotyping of some roles doesn’t help. We had to have an African American playing a witch. Hello, Bonnie from the Vampire Diaries.
